Extracurricular

Althea Jams & Blogs is my recommendation blog for Twilight fan fiction. But there are a few other things I'm doing that I'm pretty excited about.

----- rambling backstory (yer welcome)

TwiCharmed/Kari and I wanted to share our brand of crazy, I mean, felt compelled to bring our enthusiasm for good fic to a broader audience. Being full time readers (K, as a SAHM, me, being unemployed for months, ty economy), our marathon consumption of fic gave us a lot to talk about. She said podcast, and I can't believe I agreed (i. iz. shy.) We wanted a different angle and being 'just' a reader myself, I wanted our shit to not only speak from a reader's perspective, but recognize the contributions readers make to this thing of ours.

I read Becoming Bella Swan, started shouting about it from the rooftops. Kari took one look at BBS and was conducting that train! We started hanging out on twitter with the author BellaFlan and her beta Jess/jkane180. We vibed, we laughed, we had to bring them into our grand plans. Luckily, they agreed! They're both obviously super smart and funny, but they also have much more knowledge of good fics that have unusual pairings. At least unusual to me. I'm not opposed to the absence of Edward, I just happen to be drawn to him. I mean drawn to fics that feature him. Anyway, their expertise complements Kari's and mine and give us a diverse perspective.

----- what it is

We're hoping to be a bi-weekly podcast. We call it Fic Pushin' because we all are pretty passionate about the fic we like. We call ourselves Twific pimps, well, because we are Twific pimps.

SIDEBAR: Being a Twific Pimp. It's a compulsion.
If someone on twitter mentions, "I'm trying to decide what to read next" it's like a bell goes off. Like Pavlov's dog, I can't help but ask, "So, what do you feel like reading?" and then follow it up with suggestions of stories that would speak to what they want. Stories that they just have to read. Some might see it as pushy, I think of it as helpful.

Back to what our project is all about. The podcast will have a different theme every episode and the ladies & I will talk about excellent fics and issues that relate to that theme. We have a blog that supports the podcast. On that blog we have a few features that bring the focus to the readers of Twific.

> We ask readers to submit recs of fics that need to be pimped. We go through these recs and one of us will pick one to read and review for a blog feature called Friday Fic Fit.

Some reviews I've written for the Twific Pimps' Friday Fic Fit:
Daniel Gale: Cumming to America by DanielGaleH00rs/Annetteskitty
Surrendered by EvieKinz
Last Tango in Forks by AwesomeSauce76
The Cube by sdfreeze
Neverending Math Equation by twanza
Surviving Bella by Savage

> We are asking authors to remember the best reviews they've received. The ones that were particularly heartwarming, or insightful, or that made them laugh out loud. We are asking authors to send these reviews into us (we've made it easy-as-hell: push button for form, copy, paste, send). We want to honor those readers who took the time and hooked it up with an awesome review. For that reason, we created Hump Your Readers Wednesday. Every week we will post the reviews that have been sent in that week.

As you know, reviews are one of the ways that readers get to contribute to this community. When an author takes the time to reply to a review, it makes me smile. When an author acknowledges that something I wrote was special to them in some way, I get straight up giddy. I am thrilled that our site provides authors with an opportunity to publicly recognize the reviews that stand out. Just by copy and pasting a review onto our form, an author is showing the love and appreciation that readers rarely know is directed at them, personally.

We'll see how the podcast goes :) Looking back at the first episode, it was fun. But I'm pretty sure we can do even better! These ladies have so much energy and love for this project and I'm very proud to be a part of it.

>>>>>>> UPDATE
We are now up to 10 episodes of the Fic Pushin' Podcast!! I'm ridiculously proud of the work we've done. Here are some of my favorites so far:

Episode 4 - Fics That Rock!
All about music in fic. This episode was my baby.

Episode 8 - The Darkward Episode
Kari artfully titled this one Bloodlust, Tampons, and Retching. I love the episodes where it's just the three of us hanging out and talking fic.

Episode 9 - The Man Show
This is a hugely popular episode. We interviewed a bunch of men who are a part of the Twific fandom and this show is the result.

Another one where it's just us hanging out, this time dishing on Rosalie. I thought it would be really annoying to have a whole episode that was all about Rose, but it ended up packed filled with great recs and straight up silliness.

THE FANDOM PEOPLE AWARDS

We wanted to show love to all of the people in the fandom who contribute so much yet are so often overlooked. To do that, we have categories that cover the following areas:

  • The Authors, The Readers, The Betas,

  • The Fandom, The Specials, The Twi-Sites,

  • The Artists, The Banners & Blinkies, and The Fan Vids.

  • Check out THE RESULTS -- how we chose to display the results was the most important piece of this whole project. Awards can be more exclusive than celebratory, and the FPAs were our way of trying something different.

You can also listen to the LIVE BROADCAST ANNOUNCING OUR RESULTS where we explained a bit about the awards and the thinking behind how we displayed the results

    Extracurricular Post: Birth and Girl
I love on the movie Birth (with Nicole Kidman and Cameron Bright) and the song Girl (by The Beatles, off of Rubber Soul)

Extracurricular Post: Are we just waiting to tear Rob apart?
We love to build up celebrities just to tear them down. It's a culture of meanness that seems to have trouble differentiating between snark, which is funny, and hate, which is lame. When hating on a celebrity for sport, "insert Rob here" and see if it's still funny. Cuz it's just a matter of time until it is Rob who's a punchline to that joke.

    Extracurricular Post: DeviantArt
This is just a handful of the Twilight fanart that I have found and love.

Check out this hauntingly beautiful rendition of Radiohead's Creep, performed for me by my Twific Pimps sister @BellaFlan

Check out the blog I made for TwiCharmed/Kari for her birthday!
and that banner is by the lovely and talented Kassiah

This is Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart playing Cherie Currie and Joan Jett in the movie The Runaways. Hot. In fact, I talk about one of the hottest scenes in the movie in my post HOTNESS Hall of Fame: Shotgunning.

    From that post:
Shotgunning is when you are smoking and you want to share your smoke. One person inhales as another person exhales. It's a super intimate move. The sexiest thing about it... it's an innocuous gesture that is anything but.

In The Runaways, the shotgunning is what sets off their drool worthy makeout scene when Joan-Kristen blows the smoke from her joint into Cherie-Dakota's mouth. And that is why shotgunning goes in the category of "Innocuous Gestures That Turn Into Fuckhot Gamechangers." .
