. . . Looking back on September

This is my monthly look back where I reflect on what I read, loved, and wrote in the past month. You might say this has a target audience of 1... FutureAlthea whose memory is shoddy at best. But it does contain lots of solid recs because I only talk about the fic that I've read that I would rec for other people to enjoy.

September marked the launch of the Fandom People Awards, which we opened for nominations.

The Fandom People Awards Nom Your Face

Voting is now open on the FPA site

Coinciding with the FPA, we recorded Episode 6, People Make the Fandom Go Round, with special guest Kassiah. For my 60 second Pimpdown, I gushed about The Woods Are Lovely, Dark, & Deep.

WHAT I READ

In September I read a ton of stories, mostly for my role as a Twific Pimp. Most fics had to do with the themes of our upcoming episodes, or they were rec'd to us as possible stories for Twific Pimps' Friday Fic Fit.

SLASH episode. We recorded a great episode with guest Pastiche Pen. #7 Boys Who Do Boys. For my 60 Second Pimpdown, I rec'd Darkrooms and Safe Light (which I also wrote a review of here.)

Here are my picks from the copious amounts of slash I read in prep for this episode:

Love Between the Sexes - An amazing story of growth and self discovery. LOVED THIS as a story that transcends the genre-definer of "slash"

My new love, AU VampSlash
  • Yesternight
  • The Bronze Prince

Mergers & Acquisitions Started out seeming to be merely a lemonfest of escorts and johns, but as the story has progressed, the story has gotten richer. I have been pulled into their world and their dilemmas. And I've developed quite the fondness for these flawed yet endearing characters.

I also recorded a followup mini episode with fngrcufs all about the lady slash! Episode 7.1 Girls Who Do Girls :)

LEAH. I read some amazing fic this month that features a pairing I am so surprised that I'm into - Leah/Edward. Here's the backstory of how I landed there, followed by some of the Leah fic I loved.

For an upcoming episode on Fics We Don't Read, I was presented with the challenge of reading wolf pack fics, which I generally do not seek out. Actually, it was supposed to try Jake/Bella, but I'm just not into seeing Jake in that way. This is an opinion that is wholly un original, and not one that would be at all interesting to listen to discussed at length on the podcast. So I tried for wolf pack and noticed I find Leah to be a potentially interesting character to see explored in fic.

One of the most interesting pairings I ever tried, Leah/Nahuel, was rec'd to me by our episode guest nmyhappyplace/Steph, in her friend's story Who Knew? It had a fascinating setup that really got me thinking. It was an enjoyable read so far and I hope Twi-Smile continues to develop it.

In a post I wrote, Getting Bored with Fic? Leah Will Save Us All, I go into specifics on what this fic made me realize about how Leah can be used in fic to shake up the monotony and predictability of the Bella/Edward HEA.

Confessions of a Difficult Woman, by einfach mich
This is Twific storytelling at its finest. I'm super hesitant to use a phrase like that because it sounds like hyperbole. But for me, this story hits it on every level that I'm looking for.

  • You've got the insane physical attraction, and the ensuing ridiculous hotness, but you've got that tension being shared by a Leah and an Edward who are both flawed and complex. And that hotness is situated within a story that is rich with backstory and is being artfully revealed layer by layer.
  • And if you're hesitant to try something with multiple POVs (like I usually am), einfach mich surprised the hell out of me with how purposeful her choices are in how she uses the POVs to tell the story. Sometimes to set up mystery, sometimes to setup the comedy in a situation.
  • And please, if all that doesn't do it for you, there are 2 things that Leah brings to the table here: a snarky attitude that takes the piss out of any situation, and a fuckhotness about her that cannot be denied. Least of all by Edward.

DARKWARD. I started few Darkward fics for our upcoming Halloween episode. These are the standouts for me:

Darkrooms and Safe Light
(which I reviewed here.)

Beautiful Dangerous
(which I wrote about in my post, Losing it for a Psychotic Edward)

einfach mich's oneshot, My Heart of Darkness, from the Beyond the Pale contest. A really interesting contest w edgy material inspired by an image chosen from the contest collection. People really went for it, which was cool as hell.

COMEDY. I happened to have read a bunch of stories that will serve me well for our upcoming comedy episode. I fell in love with these fics and more will be said about them. But for now, they are practically a guaranteed good time:

Falling for the First Time

Died and Gone to Heaven

Sweet Tooth

The Cube
(which I reviewed for FFF on Twific Pimps)

A QUICK BREAKDOWN OF WHAT I WROTE

Hotness Hall of Fame this month got the 'guilty lemons' treatment with I Shouldn't Be Finding this SO Frickin Hot.

In all of my newfound Leah loving, I wrote about how potentially energizing I find the Leah/Edward pairing in, Getting Bored with Fic? Leah Will Save Us All

As we gear up for the Darkward episode, I've tried some darker Edwards on for size. I wrote about it in a post, Losing it For Psychotic Edward

My response to fandom fuckery that is annoying the shit out of me, Let's See How This Goes

(feel free to skip the following rant. I'm venting.)

And here is my response to the annoying way that some people in the fandom have chosen to deal with fandom fuckery, making it all the more lame and annoying:

Hooray for driving angry people into a frothy angry mob that's just waiting to take screenshots of someone saying something stupid. Forget the fact that we all say assholish things once in awhile. And that publicly humiliating people when they do will only drive people from interacting publicly. And that this whole piece of shit situation causes ALL the people, not just supposedly ego-driven people, to censor their words, their actions, and their funny, in order to avoid being jumped on by the mob. Because with all the fandom fuckery, I was hoping people would be made to feel nervous about speaking out publicly, taking away any hope of a real dialogue about shit. And I was crossing my fingers that the fun and uncensored environment I've been playing in would become hunting grounds for mockery. And by venting my frustration here, I'm probably asking for it.

And now, to end this month's "...Looking Back" on a more positive note...

BRONADO
Brooklyn Tornado
Oh, and the video taken by the boys from my neighborhood who got on camera the tornado that literally went down my street. Dude, DUDE, IT'S FUCKING FUNNELING!! Holyshit, dude. IT'S A FUCKING TORNADO fer sure. DUDE!

I enjoy how they shoot it and it's all normal tree, normal tree, TREE BEING RIPPED APART BY TORNADO. good times

Those dudes were filming from inside the tornado. If you actually want to see an interesting perspective of what the tornado looked like as it hit Brooklyn, go here.

DOUBLE RAINBOW
So this adorable guy caught a double rainbow on video.
But then these kids made a remix music video of that guy's double rainbow video. And it's THIS SONG that I can't get out of my frickin head, I love it so.

"Double rainbow all the way across the sky, yeah, yeeeeaaaaah, it's so intense!"
