Getting bored with fic? Leah will save us all.

I see myself as pretty much an Edward/Bella kind of girl. But the slashtastic pairing of Edward and Jasper made me realize there are other contexts and relationships out there that can really work well together.

For a Twific Pimps podcast, I was sent out into the unknown terrain of wolf pack fic for an episode where we had to read fics we otherwise wouldn't try. I didn't really get into pack fic, but I discovered the awesomeness that is Leah. And even more surprising was how juicy the match can be between AU/AH Leah and Edward!

Where you been all my life, girl?

Leah is a fascinating character. Canon Leah is more emotionally complex than Bella. Leah brings real issues of betrayal and loss to the table.

In fic I've found that her character is often flawed. She struggles to deal with things like resentment that lurk beneath the surface of her actions. It influences her whether she means for it to or not, whether she's even aware of it or not. It makes her more gritty and interesting from the start.

The thing with a Leah character - there is such tremendous potential in fic to explore the depth of this character.

Flawed people in real relationships

I never realized how compelling this Edward/Leah matchup could be. I've only read a handful of these fics but the ones I have really enjoyed have been the AU AH pairing of a challenging Leah (with remnants of canon traits), and an Edward who is up for the challenge but has flaws of his own. As opposed to canon E/B, the Leah connections I have read were ignited in the physical and they then had to negotiate how the relationship is translated in the real world.

Out of the shackles of E/B predicitability

A benefit of reading a Leah who is paired with Edward: there is a sense of unpredictability. We're going in knowing she is flawed so we don't assume a happy ending. This opens up story possibility because your readers are not locked in with this expectation where they're just waiting for the HEA. Leah stories provide authors with the freedom to explore alternative paths and keep their readers guessing without fear of the retribution of E/B shippers with pitchforks.

In fact, with one Leah story I'm reading right now, Hair of the Dog, I am rooting for the characters to NOT end up together. For the story she has written, and where we are right now in the story (it's a WIP), that is what I want for these characters. What I think needs to happen. And that realization has been such a powerful element in the story- that it's OK and actually sometimes better, if characters don't end up together. And it's not sad, it's actually demonstrating a character's build of strength which is an emotional payoff for the reader.

I'm not anti-HEA, just pro-possibility

There is one chapter left to go and we are still unsure of whether or not these characters will end up together. And there is a true sense of uncertainty which you wouldn't have with an Edward/Bella fic. Regardless of how this story ends, I think this author, mjinaspen, sets up a really interesting potential use of Leah as a character in fic who's not obligated to deliver the audience with a HEA. Not like how authors are beholden to E/B shippers who will pummel them with death threats if their Bella and Edward don't end up together.

Purposeful angst?

Which is not to say I'm looking for a no-HEA just for the sake of having no HEA!!! Be smart about it.

In this particular story I just mentioned, the no-HEA isn't a stunt this author is pulling as a demonstration of angst. I have found in lots of "angst" fic that authors take cheap shots at the readers' heartstrings. In this case, the no-HEA is a compelling choice that the author has built up and justified within the story.

I am hoping to get down with some great angst and I think Leah offers an interesting avenue for writing GREAT ANGST and real relationship uncertainty. [Note: Not just any angst, great angst. If you fuck with my heart for no other reason besides the fact that you can, I'm going to know, and I'm probably not going to like your story.]

Got some Leah for me?

If you know any, please rec me some great Leah stories. Don't just rec it to me because it's a Leah story. Give me some compelling character exploration.

Rec me some interesting alternative paths in stories, Leah or E/B. But don't just hit me with angst for the sake of angst. Hook me up with some stories with interesting and purposeful choices.

And if these stories aren't out there, WRITE THEM! please. and thanks.

Two amazing fics I'm reading that opened my eyes to the potential awesomeness of Leah:

Hair of the Dog by MJinAspen
AH. A few peeks into the volatile, passionate, and occasionally sweet love affair between Edward Cullen and Leah Clearwater.

Confessions of a Difficult Woman by Einfach Mich
Leah Clearwater is not the kind of girl that goes for guys like Edward Cullen. In fact, she thinks he's an asshole and Edward's made it clear he hates her too. One drunken night changes everything. AU AH For the Parkaward Contest

How to Pull Out Without Being A Dick

REGARDLESS of what your opinion might be about pulling to publish, maybe we can all agree that there is a way you can pull your fic without being a dick about it.

I just wanted to say a sincere thank you to instntkarmagirl for giving readers a fair warning before pulling her fic. That was the classy way to go and shows a lot of respect for your readers.

Especially in the case of angsty fic where people hold off on reading until it's complete for the sake of their own emotional well being. If you write an angsty fic, there will be people waiting until it's complete to read it.

On the other hand, I did not at all appreciate that out of nowhere Sebastien Robichaud pulled his fic in between the last chapter and epilogue. I read the first half of that fic and for several different reasons decided to wait until it's complete to read the rest. Early on I rec'd the hell out of this fic. I don't take ANY credit at all for it's popularity, but every little voice that spreads the word on a fic contributes to the momentum it gains. It's kind of a slap in the face as a reader when a fic is pulled with no warning. That gives us no chance to get the closure on a story we've invested in.

If I am dying to find out what happens I can of course go through back channels and find a downloaded copy of the fic, but I'd rather not disrespect an author like that. If your readers are given a chance to download your story before you pull it, you are showing your readers respect, and they will then show you respect when you ask us not to disseminate your story once you have pulled it to work on it.

Hi, I'm AltheaJams. When I have issues with the fandom I talk it out on my blog and stamp my name on it. My concerns are legit, I'm not afraid to articulate them, and I don't believe I am being mean about it. just. saying.

    p.s.

OF COURSE people are downloading fic - that's because authors keep pulling their fic and I know I don't want to be in a situation where I don't get to read the end of a story just because I am behind on my updates but the fic's been pulled. I also download fic all the time to read on my Nook.

HOTNESS Hall of Fame: I Shouldn't Find This So Hot

This edition of the HOTNESS Hall of Fame is dedicated to those lemons that make me feel dirty.

I thought of this category after reading Wide Awake by AngstGoddess003. I felt strange for being so turned on by the epic angry lemon in Chapter 43. You know, the one that creates the fallout angst that drives Edward and Bella apart. I'm reading this lemon thinking, I should NOT be finding this so ridiculously hot: Edward is hallucinating for godsakes and Bella is channeling her captor Phil. But fuck me. It's one of the hottest (and saddest) lemons out there.

Part of it has got to be the forbidden nature of how I'm definitely not supposed to find hotness within two people's mental breakdowns. But there is also the emotional intensity and tumult that is driven by the characters' confusion. These characters are losing control and channeling the emotional into the physical. HOT-NESS.

Today I will be highlighting two other lemons of the "I shouldn't find this so hot" variety. The first one showcases the crazy intensity and possessiveness of the Bella and Edward of teambella23's Closer. The second example is an excerpt from Savage's Hide and Drink where Edward loses control and almost kills Bella in his frenzy (which I feel entirely dirty for finding so hot).

Losing it For A Psychotic Edward

    Soundtrack for this post:
    Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
(open in new window or tab)

Help me. I think I'm becoming one of those women on Maury Povich who are engaged to men on death row. I am becoming addicted to psychotic Edwards.

It started with gallantcorkscrews' Emperors of Washington

summary: Edward is a killer. But it can't be explained away by his vampire nature. He's just a sociopathic, human teenager. ExB.

A pretty quick read. TOTALLY out there. It's refreshing in how different it is. I could probably get behind the blase attitude towards human life (in a Natural Born Killers, or Quentin Tarrantino kind of way) if I was able to like the characters a bit more. Not really sure what motivated their actions or words. Seemed almost as random as his killing spree.

But ultimately, Edward is a totally fucked up serial killer on the run and I found myself cheering for him. Does this indicate that the character is crafted in a way that is so clearly disturbing yet somehow manages to be sympathetic? Or, does it speak to the fact that I am so enamored with the character of Edward, in any form, that I would forgive him for being completely batshit crazy? Somehow I can get into an Edward that is not only being psychotic but is acting out on his crazy in sadistic ways that are harmful to others. What is wrong with me?

A more mild example of this phenomenon is Hide and Drink by Savage.

summary: Bella’s blood was just too tempting to be ignored.  In this version of Twilight, Edward takes Bella on a sadistic journey with his monstrous side.  While Edward drags her around the world, barely keeping a step ahead of his frantic family, Bella battles the monster for possession of the gentler vampire inside her captor.  EPOV.

Instead of just draining her on the spot, Edward steals Bella away so that he can enjoy her blood on an ongoing basis, while holding her captive. This brand of crazy is easily explained away by the fact that he is a vampire who is foaming at the mouth for her blood. In fact, his technique of only whetting his blood lust is quite intelligent because it draws out his enjoyment of her.

Another psychotic Edward that I have recently fallen in love with is the Edward in a story called Beautiful Dangerous by VampireIsTheNewBlack.

summary: He who seeks revenge should remember to dig two graves. Multi-shot/WIP, E/J, slash, bloodplay, AH, OOC, NC-17.

I am fascinated with this character! He is so cool and collected about who he is and his intentions. In the first chapter we are inside his head as he lures his prey. Does he just have a thing for blood play or is he a straight up psycho killer? This story is only 2 chapters at the moment but the cat and mouse between the predator and his prey has consumed me and I'm thirsty for more.

I now just started Buried Amongst the Begonias by DurtyNelly, which was just recently re-uploaded after a being on hiatus.

summary: Why has Alice kept her best friend, Bella, away from her twin brother? What will happen when she finally meets him? Will Alice's warnings keep Bella way, or will she do something very stupid?

Hello, you beautiful and sadistic motherfucker. I feel like Bella, caught up in the web of his sickly fascinating pull. She's clearly in danger with this dude, but can't keep herself from wanting it. I am right there with her. I shouldn't find this clearly sadistic fucker to be so hot. But I do find it all quite hot. And I feel a little guilty and dirty and totally drawn into this story.

And so it goes with a psychotic Edward. It's to the next level of being attracted to the "bad boy" in a story. A psychotic Edward combines the thrill of danger with the fascination of "who the fuck knows what he'll do next." I'm not sure how deep the rabbit hole goes with this Buried Amongst the Begonias Edward so we shall see if I can still hang as the story progresses. But I gotta say, so far I'm too fascinated to look away.

Please, someone tell me I'm not alone on this. Is anyone else completely fascinated by a psychotic Edward? Hit "comment" and tell me.

Darkrooms and Safe Light by SleepyValentina

Official Description: A vampire who has been dead for decades meets a young woman who hasn't yet begun to live. They could bring each other to life...if he doesn't kill her first. A FGB piece for Katinki. WIP

    Voyeurward, y'all.
I loves me some deviant Edward. Even when he's bringing strange women home to take photos of their O face. Actually, especially when he's bringing women home to photograph their O face.

Bella is a waitress in an Atlantic City casino. She's an interesting character. Edward is both hot and interesting as well. But the *real* reason you want to read this immediately... SleepyVal's writing.

Her storytelling is compelling in the way she reveals elements of both characters' backstory and then links them together in the present. All within a single chapter. The writing itself is as tight as a virgin Bella - each sentence seems purposeful in its construction. There's humor and richness. And I love how she mixes elegant writing and deviant behavior!

So, back to Bella. I enjoy watching her negotiate who she is.
"She pulls a few options from the closet she shares with Kate and tosses them onto her bed, knowing her dilemma isn't so much about what she wants to wear as who she wants to be."

SleepyVal peppers her description of Bella's thoughts with excellent lines that reveal the depth of her intelligence. One chapter there will be commentary on the issue of gentrification. The next chapter she will be adoring that Edward has left her a handwritten note and reflecting on the value of old fashionness.
"she sees haste as a tragedy of contemporary society."

And Edward, fighting the good fight of restraining both his blood lust and man lust. The tension is hot as Bella just wants him to touch her.
"She thinks she'll die if he doesn't touch her; he thinks she'll die if he does."

    Gah!

The Fandom People Awards Nom Your Face

This is pretty exciting, y'all. We launched the Fandom People Awards and opened them up for nominations yesterday, September 6th. Woot!

There are categories that recognize the contributions of Authors, Readers, Betas, Artists, Twi-Site Bloggers, and members of the Twific community. We're asking people to think about the people who make this fandom such a great place to be.

Authors, who hooks it up with insightful reviews? Who goes out of their way to pimp the hell out of your story? Which pre-reader or Beta throws down the most helpful feedback?

Readers, which authors have the best review replies? Who are the most accessible authors on twitter?

    Everybody:
Which banners are the hottest? the most creative? the most visually stunning? Who is the master manip-maker? blinkie-maker? banner-maker?

Which Twi-sites have the best recs? Where can you find the best resources for writing fic?

Who, in the Twific community, is the hardest working woman in show business? Who promotes the love throughout our fandom?

Think about these questions and GO SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATIONS!

Remember that these are not your average awards. It's not a popularity contest, it's an opportunity to show love to the people who often get overlooked in this fandom.

    QUESTIONS

Is there a central place where I can look at what banners are out there?
Here are just a few ideas of where you can go to check out some of the banners that are out there:

    • Many authors include in their FF.net profile the links to the banners, blinkies & art for their story.
    • On Twilighted.net the banners and art can be found directly on the authors' profiles.
    • The forums on Twilighted.net are also great resources because people always have tons of great banners as signatures for their posts.

Do I have to find 3 people to nominate for the categories with 3 spaces?
Nope. You can submit up to 3 people.

Can I go back and change my responses after I submit?
Yes. If your cookies are enabled, just return to http://www.twificpimps.com/fandompplawards/nominations/

    . . . Looking back on August

    Soundtrack for this post:

    WHAT I READ

With August came the great fic funk of 2010.
Many a fic was tried. Many a fic was flounced.
Nothing could tame my goldfishian attention span. That is, until I took a walk in the woods. Woods of the lovely, dark, and deep variety. At last I was pulled into a story where I pounded chapter after chapter, dying to know more.

And just like that... fic rut was eviscerated.
Sloppy kisses to the author of The Woods are Lovely, Dark, and Deep, bananapancakes7.

Official Description: Bella visits a quiet lodge in Forks and she meets the secretive, tormented Edward Masen. Just as their relationship transcends friendship, Edward's past comes back to haunt him in the most brutal way. B&E are human, but oh…there will be vampires. AU.

Some teasers from the review that will be posted at Twific Pimps (I'll link actual review once it's up):

You've got frisky pants Bella and Edward with the tenaciously invigorating eyes. The UST in this one is off the charts. But it's not at all just fun and games - there are serious issues that plague both Edward and Bella. Also, Edward is human, but he maintains many canon characteristics. For example, he is both a sweet protector and a self-proclaimed monster. But he gives canon Edward a run for his money when it comes to being a self-hating mess.

Did I mention the sick UST?

Oh, and thar be mystery and poetry in them there woods. There is so much story left to be revealed in this excellent WIP. I'll leave it at that and HIGHLY suggest you go check out this emotional and vivid and funny and hot story. peace

Fics I tried out as part of our Twific Pimp challenge to ourselves to read something that you usually wouldn't read:

The Apple Doesn't Fall Far by ipreferbrunettes

    Revenge Cake by restlessxpen

still need to read for "Fics I Don't Read" Challenge:
Alpha Fail by lifelesslyndsey and Who Knew? by Twi-Smile

Amongst the ruins of my fic rut, these fics stood apart as excellent reads:
    Raw and Rosy by tuesdaymidnight
    Stigmata Tomato by BellaFlan

The fic funk broke leaving a few days left in August. In that time I got my groove back and landed on one of the bests fics I've read in quite awhile: Twinned

Official Description: Edward and Masen Cullen look identical, but mistake them at your peril. Watch as their carefully constructed world falls apart when they meet the new girl in town. There's slash, smut and Jasper having shower sex with y'all. Are you ready for it? WIP

From the summary and from what I heard about this Jasper, I thought this fic was going to be a funny lemon fest. Although it has such funny characterization and a Jasper that's dripping with sex, this story is actually SO MUCH MORE.

First of all, I thought that the rotating POV would be annoying, but Conversed makes it artful. Each voice offers such insight into the characters and their world, helping peel back layer upon layer of this fascinating story.

Secondly, the author mentioned somewhere that her inspiration for the story stemmed from the thought, what could be better than Edward? Two Edwards! She gets all up in the dynamic of being a twin and she also develops two very distinct people in Edward and Masen. I love how the outside world describes them as interchangeable, but once you get the insider POVs you learn that these two boys couldn't be more different.

Third, don't get me started on how BRILLIANT Conversed is in her portrayal of the male relationships in this fic. I will explain in greater detail in my actual review, but damn! I have never seen a fic challenge such boundaries and I LOVE IT.

Bottom line: such a great read AND a Jasper against which all future Jaspers will be compared.

    WHAT I WROTE
August was a rollercoaster of highs and lows here at Althea Jams & Blogs.

    LOW
The fic Just Wait by InstantKarmaGirl unleashed a degree of angst and heartache which I had never experienced before in fic. Whew! The only way I knew how to deal with it was through writing about it and working it out. I did that in this post: It's My Blog and I'll Cry if I Want To
