I survived this 'vacation' thanks to my trusty eReader, the Nook. Better than a Kindle, less complicated than an iPad... the Nook is where it's at. Prior to leaving for vacation I loaded this puppy up with over 30 stories I've been wanting to read: some AU, some AH, some completed, some WIP. I ended up reading
Frenemies (someone sent me a copy of this old fic by McVampy AKA AngryBadgerGirl, which was taken down awhile ago, but continues to be heralded as the funniest fic ever). So sweet and ABG does the adorable banter of rivals turned luvahs. All this talk of Skittleward, and now I get it.
Bonne Foi by AmethystJackson, a brilliant AU that is laced with the heady implications of existentialism. Edward seems to see the philosophy as justification for his lifestyle and life choices. Bella gets him to question that perspective and a lot more. We are not told that this Bella is smart, we witness her unique charm and intelligence as Edward does. I was loving E & B's interactions and in no rush for the introduction of the Cullens but the way they are brought into the story, along with James and Victoria, was a fun Forksian adventure. Can't wait to read what happens next!
Burning the Edges by gangsterdorothy - I was wanting an angsty Bella after reading A BUNCH of angsty Edwards in HtSaL, Burn&Shine, MotU, Loner, etc. I got my angsty Bella in the form of a lovable pyromaniac and social outcast. Her brother Emmett and Charlie create a lovable little family unit that accepts her weirdness. I love how everyone knows about her love of burning things and she has agreed to participate in controlled 'experiments' under the loving care of the Forks Fire Department. Bella of course is tortured at school my the Bitch Brigade who humiliate her at every turn. For some reason the Cullens' wealth keeps them from befriending Bella. And Rose, a member of the BB, is dating Emmett and therefore spying on Bella's behalf. This story is a fun little HS romp, and a good read if you like a snarky, quirky Bella, but there are some things that made me go, Huh?
- like this Emmett would ever let these girls get away with torturing his sister, let alone date one of them
- Rosalie's excuse for having to stay friends with the BB - she's pretty so she *has* to socialize with that particular group. And Bella accepts that as a valid excuse!? That we should feel bad for Rose's limited choices because, "woe is me, it's hard being so pretty."
- the ultimate acts of Bella-torture that land Lauren in a heap of trouble, for which she receives 2 weeks detention because (a) Bella is above punishing someone else, and (b) Lauren somehow convinces Bella that she is in love with Bella, which is why she makes her life miserable. Seriously?
Had to rant about that. But this is a fun little fic so I tried not to think too much about these things and enjoy it for what it is.
And finally, the last fic I got to on my vacation (which I am currently still working on)
The Fallout by OCDindeed. I love this story so much that I want to make out with it. She is ridiculously brilliant in the set up of this story and in the structure of her storytelling. This story was made for me. I was offline while on vacation so I haven't gotten the chance to review any of these stories yet, but OCDindeed is about to feel the love all up in her inbox.
In conclusion, Nook is WIN.
I forgot the two non-Nook fics I hit up post vacation. Click to see what I wrote about them: Aro's Heir by SubtlePen and Small Town Gossip by LASMKE
